Medical Device Development Support in Action

Building a Home Monitoring System for Patients

A medical device company set out to create a home monitoring solution for chronic conditions. To make it work, they needed reliable medical device development support that could complement their internal team. Their product connected with third-party diagnostic tools—pulse oximeters, scales, blood pressure cuffs, and glucose monitors—and pushed patient data to the cloud. Physicians could then remotely review results and track progress without patients needing to come into the clinic.

The idea was strong, but execution presented the usual hurdles: strict regulatory requirements, the need for manufacturing readiness, and a development timeline that was already aggressive.

Where the Team Needed Support

The client already had a strong internal engineering group handling both hardware and firmware development. But they faced two challenges common to many teams in this position:

  • 📦 Bandwidth – More parallel progress was needed to hit milestones on time.

  • 📜 Specialized expertise – Manufacturing knowledge and regulatory compliance experience were critical to getting the device across the finish line.

Without support, the launch risked delay.

How Medical Device Development Support Made the Difference

Embedded Engineering Solutions joined as an augmentation partner—not a replacement for the internal team. Our role was to:

  • 🔧 Support firmware development alongside in-house engineers.

  • 🛠️ Inject specialized knowledge in manufacturing preparation.

  • ✅ Guide the device through FCC certification and related hurdles.

By providing targeted medical device development support, we allowed their engineers to focus on core design work while we handled bandwidth spikes and specialized tasks. This flexible model let us plug in exactly where help was most needed.

Key Breakthroughs on the Path to Launch

Over the course of more than a year, our joint team reached several major milestones:

  1. Advanced hardware and firmware development so that features could move forward without bottlenecks.

  2. Prepared the design for production, ensuring smooth transition into manufacturing.

  3. Cleared FCC certification, a must-have for any wireless medical product.

  4. Released to production, making the device available for physicians and patients.

Takeaways for Future Projects

This project was a reminder that outside support doesn’t have to mean outsourcing the whole product. It can simply mean giving an internal team the bandwidth or the specialized expertise to get over key hurdles.

  • 🚀 Extra bandwidth accelerates timelines without requiring long-term headcount.

  • 🧭 Certification is smoother with experience—the pitfalls are predictable if you’ve navigated them before.

  • 🤝 Collaboration beats handoff. Working side-by-side with internal teams aligns with our process: tight scope, clear milestones, and visible proof of progress.
